FAITH IN HUMANITY RESTORED; AN EPIPHANY ON CHENNAI DELUGE

FAITH IN HUMANITY RESTORED;
AN EPIPHANY ON CHENNAI DELUGE

On the past few weeks, we have witnessed the melancholy of Chennaiites, where the relentless rain that lashed there mercilessly, wreaked havoc and left its people homeless or stranded in their homes without even food, water, and other essentials. The newspapers and other social medias has painted the real gritty picture of the devastation and brunt of the people in rain ravaged Chennai. Many reports, articles, discussions and all came in medias on various aspects of Chennai deluge. But what striked me more than anything about Chennai deluge is, the humanitary part.

“I have two big houses in Chennai, a branded luxurious car, and lakhs of bank balance in my bank account. And till yesterday, my ultimate aim was to develop my company internationally Today, what I want is just some food and water on my terrace.” This is the post of a Chennai flood victim that I have seen in facebook a few days ago. That facebook post suddenly vexed me and created an epiphany on me. This is the despondency of a single person. Likewise thousands of heterogeneous people whose houses where marooned and whose livelihoods snatched away. Those people who were left to the roads homeless in a single day! Beggers, slum dwellers, rich and elite people, everyone became congruent in just one day. Everyone scrambling for same food from the relief groups.

“Water water everywhere, but not a single drop to drink” is their situation. They have homes, but can’t stay there, have phones, but no charge, have bikes or cars, but can’t drive, have thousands and lakhs in bank account, but can’t buy even food. These things failed to serve them at right time. These are the predicaments in which money is just some worthless papers, of no use, but a kind heart, few compassionate words, and humanity costs more than anything.
People have forgotten their animosities and got united by such crisis. This is exemplified by the act of giving shelter to everyone irrespective of their castes, religion and creed, in temples, mosques and churches. This is exactly what Bible, Gita and Quran wanted us to do. It seems to me as strange ways of God for uniting people.

Not only victims, but many more benevolent volunteers who came forward for helping Chennaiites unveiled the fact that some tint of humanity is still existing…! More volunteers than victims in Chennai is another humanitarian part that overpowered my mind.

All religions share a common belief, of sharing and caring, which is truly portrayed at the times of crisis. Hope such vestige of humanity that is concealed deep in their heart during their busy schedule of lucrative activities, which is brought out only during such hardships and crisis, gets exposed and becomes paramount.
